Her video call wardrobe has run the gamut from casual (last week’s spaghetti-strap dress from Tracy Reese) to laid-back LA style (her range of pared-back blouses by Victoria Beckham). But yesterday, Meghan Markle relied on a classic that her sister-in-law is also fond of: the pin-sharp black suit. Appearing on the next installment of interview talks for TIME100, Markle wore a sharp-shouldered tuxedo jacket by Alexander McQueen.
Eagle-eyed fans will have noticed that it’s a very similar style and cut to the blazer worn by Kate Middleton. In quite a departure from her customary wardrobe of shirt dresses and colour-blocked coats, Middleton wore an almost identical blazer last week in a video broadcast from the Natural History Museum.
Markle, however, has form in the tuxedo department. For 2018’s Endeavour Fund Awards, she wore black tailoring from Alexander McQueen, and has since shrugged the blazer over floral dresses for public duties.
It might not be on the cards for most of us at the moment, but there’s something about the tuxedo suit. Its enduring appeal is wrapped up in the fact that while it’s a kind of armour, it’s also incredibly easy to wear. And Alexander McQueen is the ultimate, whether you’re actual royalty or acting royalty.
Cate Blanchett, who pledged to rewear previous red carpet outfits for charity at this year’s Venice Film Festival, recycled one of her own tuxedos from McQueen, and the label also counts Greta Gerwig, John Legend and Timothée Chalamet as members of its fan club. We don’t know about you, but perhaps it’s time to dust off the classic black suit.
