At the Oscars on Sunday evening Lupita Nyong'o wore a Calvin Klein Collection gown made of 6,000 white Akoya pearls, with the pearls alone reported to be worth an eye-watering $150,000.
It's a dress which in decades to come would fit right in in exhibits - but TMZ has reported that it was stolen from her hotel room. Sources tell TMZ that the precious gown was taken from her hotel room between 8am and 9pm on Tuesday.
The gown is one of a kind and took months of planning between Lupita and Calvin Klein's Francisco Costa - not exactly something you can put on eBay.
Costa said to American Vogue about the dress: “Lupita has become a close friend of the house over the last year. From the onset, I wanted the dress to be graphic, yet warm and luxurious” which he achieved by “creating a series of textures with intricate placements of a variety of different-sized pearls. We looked at a variety of different pearls—South Sea, iridescent, and natural—and decided that the natural pearls looked the most beautiful.”
