Ryan Gosling presented his directorial debut - Lost River - to critics at the Cannes Film Festival last year. A whole nine months passed, Harper Lee has written a second To Kill A Mockingbird, and we're still waiting on the release. But Warner Brothers have finally given us a trailer and a release date.
In Lost River Gosling directs his partner Eva Mendes, as well as Christina Hendricks, Matt Smith and Saoirse Ronan. It follows a family in a surreal, dying town. From the trailer we're a little, well, lost. We enter into a Gosling-imagined reality where there's phantom bicycles on fire, crumbling walls, a bloodied Eva Mendes and, err, light sabers. It's dark and arty.
The film received brutal reviews at the Cannes Film Festival with several including the words you never want to see in a film review - LOL and WTF.
Ryan Gosling said about directing in an interview during Cannes: "I used to feel like film-makers were like magicians and it was like magic. When you work with enough of them you realise they are just really hard workers and work harder than anyone else."
He added: "It was so different than other things I've done because, other experiences I've had are three months or six months, but this whole thing was about three years so getting to spend that amount of time with something and wrestle with it, it becomes a real relationship."
