Does Primark’s Most Popular Item Reveal The High Street’s Biggest Autumn Trend?

I noticed people wearing bobble hats over the weekend, which kind of made it official. Summer is over and the long march to winter is happening. Of course, it’s still a way off before the clocks go back in October, but don’t let that stop you getting truly hygge in the meantime. Hot chocolates before bed, cashmere sleep socks, scarves, hats, gloves; nothing is off limits. There is, however, an ultimate way to style out the cosy season. Ever since that ‘bradigan’ moment on Katie Holmes, a knitwear lounge set, whether it’s a bra top and cardigan or a jumper and track pants, has been peak hygge for the fashionable crowd. And it looks like it’s already hit the high street. At Primark, a picture of its pale pink fluffy lounge set has become its most liked post of 2020, with almost 200,000 likes on Instagram.

Dip a little deeper and you’ll soon realise that this is just the tip of the iceberg, with almost all high street retailers getting into the knitted co-ord game this autumn. Mango’s cable-knit sweater and shorts combo isn’t strictly appropriate outside the house (or perhaps even for answering the door, those shorts are short!), but can you imagine anything more fabulous for lounging in front of the telly? Arket’s scoop-neck sweater and trackpants in taupe are genuinely smart enough for the school run, especially if, like Katie Holmes, you throw an oversized blazer on top.

Of course, if you really want to look like Holmes, who also buys cashmere track pants from Ven Store FYI, a lounge set comprised of a cardigan and bra/top is really your only option. Bershka’s strappy blouse and cardigan co-ord is lovely, while Joseph’s tank top and cardigan combo has ‘autumn’ written all over it. Wear either with jeans and loafers (another styling trick borrowed from Holmes) and you’re sorted.
