It's the glitziest night in the British film calendar, and after a dry red carpet, master of ceremonies Stephen Fry noted that inside the Royal Opera House it was 'pissing down with stars.' And it really was. From Reese Witherspoon and Julianne Moore - and then Tom Cruise who popped out of nowhere - providing the Hollywood glam, to Professor Stephen Hawking out-braining our host (and remarking he was 'better looking too'), it was a night of in-jokes and classy style. Here are some of the best bits...
Best beard-off
Superman met Captain America in a super-heroic unity of facial fuzz. Whether it was Chris Evans' close crop, or Henry Cavill's more dishevelled 'two week hobo', it was a win for beardkind. And Jamie Dornan wasn't even there to add ground support.
Best acceptance put-down
From The Theory of Everything's writer accepting his award for 'Best Unoriginal Screenplay' to Best Supporting Actor J.K. Simmons thanking his 'above average children' it was a night for slightly snarky pick-up nods. But it was BAFTA Fellowship winner, director and cheeky scamp Mike Leigh - prior to this point ignored by the academy he was being inducted to - who told any naysayers 'may you all rot in hell' as he closed off his thank you, who has to get the plaudit for the best put-down of the evening.
Best couple
Actually more of a trio these days, pregnant Best Supporting Actress nominee Keira Knightley and her husband, Klaxons musician James Righton who looked super cute all night, beaming from ear-to-ear at their soon-to-be new-addition. Runner up places go to, newishlyweds Eddie Redmayne and Hannah Bagshawe in all their ethereal, winning glory, and super hot young Brit exports Sam Claflin and Laura Haddock looking exceptionally glamorous and loved up.
Best Kiss
When Cuba met Stephen. Show... me... the honey!
**Best Use Of Velvet **
Stephen Fry accented his tux with velvet slippers, Eddie Redmayne mastered the fabric with a smoking jacket, Douglas Booth wore an emerald tuft, and even Noel Gallagher opted for a brown take on what looked like a moleskin/ velvet cross-breed. Over the pond, Sam Smith was even flying the flag for Brit velvet in his burgundy Grammys two-piece. But it was Best Actress Julianne Moore who gave it some real ve ve voom with her scarlet velvet and crepe Tom Ford creation. Smoking.
