Ten years ago if you asked us if we’d ever retire our skinny jeans we would have side-eyed you and said no. But a lot has changed in the last decade. Indie died, Grime came back and the drainpipe was replaced with the mom jean (high-waist, crotchy and straight-legged). We don’t have to tell you that fashion is a constantly redefining itself, replacing and restitching the most ‘in’ designs with the most unexpected trends. Take the rise of the kitten heel, for instance, who saw that coming? And, while skinny and mom jeans will never be 100 per cent out of style, they have been temporarily trumped by four new denim trends for autumn winter 2018.
Craving something totally new? Try the dad jean. With a straight wide leg, they are like something Steve Carrell might have worn in Crazy Stupid Love before Ryan Gosling gave him the mother of all makeovers. Sure you can probably find some in a middle-America Gap outlet, but if authenticity isn’t a deal breaker then look to Warehouse and Topshop.
Double denim this season comes in the form of a boiler suit. Just like a jumpsuit, but with a utilitarian edge and a lot less fitted, it works best with a polo neck snuck underneath or a silk scarf around the neck. If that’s not enough jean-on-jean for you then consider the patchwork trend, which makes a reappearance this fall. Stitched with 70s references, it’s this year’s take on distressed denim.
It’s not that indigo jeans have fallen out of favour per se, but white denim feels a little cooler this winter. Pick a slightly off shade, like ivory or cream and a silhouette that’s a little edgy, say with frayed hems or contrast stitching, to move past this style’s tacky rep. We’ve got our eye on the Gabi from Whistles, but don’t miss out Finery’s hot take either
