Tonight in Paris Jean Paul Gaultier will show his last ready-to-wear collection in order to concentrate on couture, fragrances, collaborations and special projects like costume design. It’s almost 40 years since JPG showed his debut collection in 1976 and since his business really took of in ’82 he has been a pillar stone of the Paris Fashion Week circuit. The schedule seems unimaginable without the theatrics and fabulously old-school fashion shocks of a JPG show – who else would give Concita Wurst a runway finale or persuade Madonna to unleash her, erm, assets onto the unwitting FROW?

Beth Ditto and JPG, October 2010 [Rex]

As one of the hottest tickets going, L’Enfant Terrible as he was so aptly and quickly named back in the day, has had incredible stars-of-the-moment both on the catwalk and watching it. Beth Ditto, Dita Von Teese stepped up the bar that Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington all set in Jean Paul’s instantly recognisable conical bras, sharp masculine suiting, highly camp showgirl gowns, punk tartans, tattoo motifs and every possible take on the classic Breton stripe that one could think of.

Conchita Wurst on the A/W'14 Haute Couture catwalk [Rex]

In honour of such a tenure on the RTW scene we thought it only proper to provide you with a nice big gallery of JPG’s special runway moments – from the hat that looked like a glittering red ship through to the Carla Bruni in nothing more than a saucy smattering of pink crystals, here’s why this innovator and rule-breaker will be sorely missed in next year’s line-up….
