Watching Jane Fonda walk the Cannes Film Festival’s Red Carpet in a blue Atelier Versace gown, and outshining pretty much every young Hollywood starlet there is, once again proves her status as a fashion icon.
Jane, who started her career back in the 60s, still manages to impress on the latest cover on W Magazine. The 77 year-old talks about her life as an actress, sex symbol, fitness guru, political activist and fashion icon.
“I think it’s a hoot that, at my age, people are calling me a fashion icon,” the actress said about her influence on the fashion universe, which became rather evident when she was wearing her iconic green Balmain jumpsuit at this year’s Grammy Awards and Rihanna cried out ‘Ohmigod! I want to be you when I grow up!’
But Jane’s view on fashion has not always been positive: ‘Truthfully, my relationship to fashion has always been strained. When I was starting out as an actress in New York, I worked as a model because I needed to pay for acting classes. But I didn’t have what it took to be a model. I hated all the emphasis on how I looked, and I never paid much attention to clothes.’
Everything changed when she met Katherine Hepburn who questioned ‘ What do you want it to say about you?’ while she was fixing her hair. Jane’s attitude completely changed and she realized that her appearance was a big part of the persona she was presenting to the world.
The full interview about her countless career paths and three marriages appears in W Magazine’s June/July Issue.
