Between appearing in last season’s & Other Stories campaign and becoming the current face of OTT jewellery brand Alexis Bittar, the fabulous 93 year old Iris Apfel is hot fashion property. Her latest modelling accolade sees her appearing in Kate Spade’s brand new Spring Summer 2015 imagery, alongside 22 year-old Victoria’s Secret model Karlie Kloss.
Kate Spade’s choice of Apfel comes as legendary ladies flood our Instagram feeds and the world of campaign imagery (80 year old literary genius Joan Didion is the face of Spring Summer 15 Celine, whilst 71 year-old music icon Joni Mitchell fronts the new Saint Laurent collection) but teaming her with Kloss is rather inspired. In entirely individual looks - surprise, surprise the Angel is in white, whilst textile designer Apfel works her trademark mixed prints and brights – and at either end of the age spectrum, this duo will appeal to two entirely different shopping worlds.
The prim and uptown styling of Kloss - with her 1.9 million Instagram followers and high profile BFF Taylor Swift - couldn’t be a cuter contrast with the elegant but utterly OTT icon Apfel. In recent years Apfel’s style has been honoured in momentus ways: from ‘Rare Bird’ - an exhibition of her wardrobe held at the New York Metropolitan museum in 2005 - to Ralph Lauren dedicating an entire upholstery collection to her in 2006 and MAC cosmetics launching a range of typically bright and bold ‘Iris Apfel colours’ (Pink Pidgeon and Scarlet Ibis to name but a few of the exotically labelled) and this new flood of appearances only enhances our huge love for this individualistic and inspiring fashionista.
