Instagram is a terrible enabler when it comes to tracking your ex’s movements and helping you spend money. It works like this: an influencer wears something – a dress, a pair of espadrilles – and within weeks you start seeing it again and again as you scroll. ‘The real snowball pieces always come from a place of authenticity,’ says influencer and author of Why Social Media Is Ruining Your Life, Katherine Ormerod. ‘A brand will send their lookbook and ask you to choose from the collection. We’re all influenced by the same taste osmosis and suddenly you see that dress that was so you.... everywhere. It’s rarely the piece a brand would push. It can be the simplest style that everyone falls for.’
Indeed, this summer has only helped to prove Ormerod's point. From the brand everyone's coveting to the print everyone's wearing, here are the breakout stars of the past few weeks, as championed by Instagram...
The hit brand
Your classic holiday post in a sunflower field wouldn’t be complete without this puff-sleeved number by Sleeper. The brand specialises in sleepwear and has had an Instagram boom – technical term – this summer. If the gingham is too picnic blanket for your liking, the mimosa print is equally good for the ’gram.
The It sandals
Tibi’s upscale leather flip-flops might be making the rounds on Instagram, but the influencers are still backing Brazil’s finest – Havaianas. The zestier the better, so choose lime, tangerine or lemon.
The statement shades
Put down the cat’s eye and step away from the aviators. The only shades to be seen in right now are Gucci’s slimline ovals, spotted on Lucy Williams in a Sunny D shade of orange.
The on-trend check
Everyone wants to be in the #gannigirls gang, and this summer, fans of the Danish brand have been posting pictures of highlighter-bright gingham in neon green. The seersucker shorts, which sit high on the waist and come with a sweet frill at the hem, get our vote.
The OTT sun screen
Ever since Jacquemus made a straw hat the size of a beach umbrella, the style set has been obsessed with attention-seeking toppers. According to shopping app LIKEtoKNOW.it, the searches for wide-brim hats have increased by a whopping 4,500%. Aussie label Avenue’s comes with a supersized brim and a sweet under-the-chin ribbon. Sold.
The bra-friendly slip
Clocking in at the more affordable end of the scale is Ghost’s blossom-sprayed slip dress in peachy satin. The designer Blanca Miro Scrimieri is a big fan; you will be too when you realise that its inch-and-a-half thick straps will easily cover your bra’s.
