Last week we taught you how to take on one of SS16's trickiest trends, so this week we're mixing things up and opting for what might be one of the easiest. You're welcome.
From paper bag waists to grown up gingham, this season's runways featured tons of real-life-ready details. Most wanted? The universally flattering peekaboo shoulder, as pioneered at Proenza Schouler.
Bared by Alexa, Olivia, and pretty much every other stylish girl in between, the shoulder hasn't had this big a fashion moment since Brigitte Bardot. Best of all, this is one trend you don't have to be a muse to pull off.
Olivia Palermo, Alexa Chung and Kate Hudson
Yet to give it a go? We've teamed up with Tu to bring you 5 reasons why you need to give your wardrobe the cold shoulder this season (er, so to speak). Read on, then shop the pieces you'll need straight from the gallery.
1. It's universally flattering
Sure, we've all got our hang-ups, but whatever your shape, we can guarantee there's little more flattering than an exposed shoulder. Show off a little with an unexpected cut-out, or wear a Bardot-style neckline just below the collarbone for maximum feel good factor (not to mention style points).
2. It’s surprisingly versatile
Unlike some other fashion faves – we're looking at you, pyjama pants – a cold shoulder works for pretty much any occasion. Pair a jersey cut-out with raw hem denim for an off-duty look, or try offsetting ruffle detail with tuxedo trousers and a barely-there sandal for evening.
3. It’s British summer proof
It's no secret that the the Great British Summer can be a fashion minefield, but this is one style that's got you covered (literally). With options from long or short sleeves to bold slash-necks and delicate ties, there's a piece to suit all styles and temperatures.
4. It’s got staying power
Don't like to splurge on something that'll see you through a single season? We hear you. Thankfully, this trend was all over the AW16 runways too. Take notes from Peter Pilotto and Mary Katrantzou and opt for bold prints that will stand the test of time.
5. It doesn’t have to mean going all out
Still a little scared to bare all? Single shoulder details were all over the catwalk too. Make like Kate Hudson and try romantic lace, or channel Versace in an asymmetric co-ord.
