Well, here we are, at the beginning of a brand new year. While it may seem as though Christmas was months ago, your wardrobe may well tell a different story. As you try to find warm, comfy clothes to wear for January, you may find it difficult to see beyond the wealth of sequins and glitter lurex you spent most of your time in last month. Because while sequins are renowned to be absolutely terrible for the planet, that didn't stop us buying them. In fact, a study conducted by the environmental charity Hubbub suggested that British shoppers would spend £2.4 billion on party outfits that may only be worn once. So, rather than beating yourself up over the sequin dress you bought in a moment of festive hysteria, find a new use for it.
While I can't ignore their negative environmental impact, I have to admit that sequins can actually look pretty chic during the day, which is exactly when I'm suggesting you should wear them. Rather than try to recycle or – even worse – throw away the sequin pieces your wardrobe is harbouring, find a way to make them work as part of your everyday outfits.
I'm not suggesting you go full-on disco to the office, but rather take a suggestion from one of the many street stylers who have been trialling their own sparkly numbers by day. Sequined pencil skirt? Try it with an oversized knit and boots. That glittery shift dress? Layer over a white shirt and add pumps. As for those sequin tops, pair them with straight-leg jeans and trainers.
Not only is re-wearing these items the best thing to do, environmentally-speaking, it will also help brighten up what is notoriously the bleakest month of the year. In many ways, then, you're looking at a win-win situation.
