All this time indoors has been revelatory. We've learnt how much we love to snack (endlessly!), we've discovered the merits of virtual socialising, we've realised we are rather happy living entirely in tracksuits, thank you very much. But, perhaps above all, what we've all come to realise is quite how impactful a happy home is for our moods.
In the past couple of weeks, our homes have transformed from not just a space to rest our head and house our clothes, but into a multi-purpose office, restaurant, gym and even a (virtual) party venue. So it only seems natural that we're looking to spruce up our interior game and bring a much needed dose of joy to our quarantined lives.
Luckily, there's no shortage of inspiration or ways to bring a dose of joy to our domestic spaces. The lines between fashion and interiors have never before been so blurred – from designer collaborations to our favourite influencers sharing tips on keeping your spirits up in lockdown.
The secret to productive WFH? Essentially, we need these three things to make for a healthy working environment: natural light, fresh air and some great snacks. But you know what else really helps? Routine, comfort and a serene environment.
'For the first time in history, we are confined to our homes; I think that as humans, we try to build routine and ritual into our day to keep us sane,' says Rosh Mahtani, founder of Alighieri, 'old routines of packing your bag to go to work, putting on your shoes and coat, are being replaced with making breakfast, organising old clothes and memories, and lighting a candle before bed.'
It's not surprising then that we are turning our purchase power towards accents that make these daily rituals feel more special. 'My morning ritual is to lay the table with gilded napkin rings, and shell dishes and as the sun goes down, I light multiple candles and try to mark the end of the day' says Mahtani. We love the idea of not allowing each day to pass in a blur of video-calls and Deliveroo take-outs and ensuring that we appreciate the little things. The cult accessories brand are also donating 20% of all website sales to the Trussell Trust, supporting food banks around the UK during the Covid-19 crisis.
Alongside establishing an out-of-hours routine, the key to a successful home office requires a clear head space. We recommend a good de-cluttering of your workspace and organising everything into chic storage boxes and baskets. We're big fans of these rattan baskets from H&M Home to hold everything from back issues of Grazia to blankets and slippers.
And while we’re all trying to navigate the newfound hurdle of working from home, this isn’t reserved solely to a home office.
The designer Anissa Kermiche is loved not only for her sculptural jewels but is the genius behind the famed Love Handle and Bottom vases (we're filling ours with blooms from Pollenet), and is keeping herself from feeling lonely during isolation by lining up her 'Tit For Tat' candlesticks in her kitchen as 'they feel the most human'.
Anissa has also been filling the void of eating out by 'shopping for things that I’ve never bought before like silver trays, avocado slicers and new egg cups to eat soft boiled eggs at home - rather than at Soho House. It's all about trying to recreate the beauty of the outside in your home, and that's something we tend to neglect' says Kermiche.
Known for their love of colour, print and one-of-a-kind pieces, Anthropologie have just launched their latest collaboration with Los Angeles-based brand Clare V. The collection is a nod to Clare's summers spent in France, exploring flea markets, and brings an injection of colour to your home. We predict a sell out.
We spoke to Anthropologie's Creative Director Luella Lane who shared her tips for a happy home including adding a disco ball to your home office...
'The first thing I would recommend is to get a disco ball for your home office. They are so much fun and add a very uplifting magical feel to any room . I’ve had mine since the early nighties It’s like a ray of sunshine even on the darkest day', says Lane. 'In my office I have a rainbow theme - I have rainbow coloured sets of pens, pencils, tape, stationary'.
'In my sitting room I love to add colour, a great way to incorporate this is by changing your cushion covers. Over the years I have continued to add more and more and more to my living spaces…its an organic transformation'. We particularly love this painterly style cushion cover to inspire our new found craft endeavours.
These Happy at Home picks are the perfect investment pieces that will not only make you smile, but hopefully add a well-deserved pick-me-up to your working from home space.
