2014 Grammys: The Outfits That Divided Opinion

For the 2005, sorry, 2014, Grammy Awards an overriding feeling of déjà vu, has persisted. Haven’t we seen Beyonce in see-through mermaid-tailed lace before? Doesn’t Taylor Swift always wear something gold and sparkly? Kelly Osbourne did black’n’studded with her lilac ‘do, so we’re pretty sure she’s got that formula on a repeat fashion prescription.

Seen it all before? Kelly Osbourne in Badgley Mischka, Bey in Michael Costello, Taylor Swift in Gucci [Rex]

It's not that these aren't lovely choices, we were just hoping for something with a little more chutzpah. However, even with such a safe red carpet, a handful of ensembles still managed to create chatter…

1. MADONNA'S NOUVEAU ACCESSORISING

[Rex]

The only different thing about Madonna’s black and white Marlene Dietrich homage (for how many times have we seen Madge en-suit?) was that this time she accessorised with both gold grillz and, um, her adopted son David Banda. To take a kid on the red carpet (even without the match-matchy spats and Ralph Lauren tailoring) is a talking point in itself, however, according to E! 'twas eight-year-old David, not his chameleonic mama, who played style-influencer. Wgeb Ryan Seacrest asked the young’un whether he chose the looks, David replied, 'Yes I did ... Yes she does [follow my lead].’ However – as freaking cool as he obviously is – grillz are not yet allowed. All in good time, pal.

2. KATY PERRY'S COUTURE:

[Rex]

Practically fresh off tha’ runway and onto K-Pez was this Valentino Spring 2014 Couture gown – the opening look of the Paris show, no less. As a lover of a literal, kooky fashion move, you may notice that Katy – singer/songwriter – has a musical score embroidered on the front of her dress. Could it be California Girls? No, probably the original design: Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata. Why has the look created debate? Katy’s wondrous body was encased in something that looked a tad uncomfortable and, lesbehonest, she looks naked from the waist up. We wish she would channel the bosomy goddesses of times gone by – she could easily be Gina Lollobrigida or Sophia Loren in a quick flick of eyeliner.

3. PHARREL'S HAT:

[Rex]

To the untrained fashion eye this is nothing more than a desperate ploy for extra height - something that we’re sure Pharrell doesn’t give two hoots about. To those in the know this is a very fashion forward Vivienne Westwood’s Worlds End Mountain hat.

4: THE BUTT & BOOBS RULE DOESN'T APPLY ON STAGE:

Beyonce in La Perla's cage collection [Rex]

Which meant that Bey rocked out in a near-thong and body-cage, Pink did acrobatic splits in a lace leotard and Katy Perry pole-danced in fishnets. All very subtle.

5: A BEST-DRESSED BUMP OUTDID EVERYONE - INCLUDING NON-BUMPS:

[Rex]

Ciara has impressed us non-stop since she revealed her bump two weeks ago on Americana tele. Yes, her unborn may have been lavishly swathed in bronze Emilio Pucci sequins, but there was something perfectly understated about this shimmering gown and honeyed hair. Di-vine.

6. CHLOE GREEN LOOKED REALLY FIT:

[Rex]

In a relationship that has far surpassed our expectations, Chloe Green and Marc Anthony are still going strong over 12 months later. And for her debut Grammy Awards the Topshop heiress looks pretty damn gorgeous. On a side note: J Lo was not in attendance, which made this year's Grammys that little bit less exciting IOHO.

7. RIHANNA HAS A NEW FASHION ADDICTION:

Rihanna in Alexandre Vauthier and Altuzarra [Rex]

We’re more than accustomed with every contour of RiRi’s killer body – she’s provided much bikini action on instagram of late – but her fashion tack is to do a front slit down to her navel, and then follow that up with an equally raunchy thigh-slit up to her, well… high up. Yes there’s a chance of nipple exposure, but we’d wager that Rihanna doesn’t really give a crap. She may not have walked the event’s red carpet, but her pre-partying provided enough style action for one weekend.
