Are Glittery Birkenstocks The New Summer ‘It’ Shoe?

Opening Ceremony x Birkenstock glittery sandals

Footwear brand Birkenstock has long reigned as the normcore shoe of choice for summer, thanks in large part to its simple look combined with maximum comfort. This year though, your sandals are about to get a high fashion makeover, courtesy of Opening Ceremony and a whole lot of glitter.

First debuted at the fashion house’s Disneyland show, the sparkly flats come in two designs, the Boston, which is a slip-on closed-toe clog, or the classic Arizona, a two-strapped sandal. Featuring the same comfy cork footbed as well as soft fleece uppers, the style of the shoes remain exactly the same – it’s just the outside that has had a makeover. Glitter-wise, you can choose from pink or silver, or both, depending on how much sparkle you can handle. Once you’ve decided on a colour way and style, there’s only one thing left to decide: will you be wearing yours with bare feet, or with ankle socks, à la the show?

Fashion has had a thing for so-called ‘ugly shoes’ recently, favouring Gucci’s fluff-lined flat slip-ons, Christopher Kane and Balenciaga’s Crocs collaborations and the omnipresent dad sneaker, so we are predicting big things for these glittery Birkenstocks. Popularised by Phoebe Philo at Celine in 2014, Birkenstocks have been a fashion staple for the past few years, after wallowing in a hippie wasteland for much of their life. Now, with a glittery facelift, they’re set to be worn by every influencer on your Instagram this summer.
