George Clooney confirmed that his wife Amal, a human rights lawyer, is the brains in their relationship on Monday night. Making a speech at the SeriousFun Children’s Network Gala at the New York Lincoln Centre, George got a little muddled with the numbers when paying tribute to Paul Newman, who founded camps for sick children.
The star poked fun at himself as he mixed up the statistics and told the audience, which included guests like Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep and Danny DeVito, “since 1988 these camps have brought over a half a million sick kids and their families from over five…from over 50 countries, 500 countries would be too many. There aren’t actually that many… My wife’s the smart one.”
Amal, who married George last September, was unable to attend the charity event as she was busy working on a case.
This isn’t the first time that Amal has been pinpointed as the brainier of the pair. When the couple got engaged George told Variety, "I'm marrying up".
Tina Fey poked fun at Clooney at the Golden Globes in January, acknowledging Amal’s amazing human rights work to highlight the absurb nature of Hollywood awards shows.
“George Clooney married Amal Alamuddin this year, Amal is a human rights lawyer who worked on the Enron case, was an advisor to Kofi Annan regarding Syria and was selected for a 3 person UN commission investigating rules of war violations in the Gaza strip. So tonight, her husband is getting a lifetime achievement award” she said.
George also gushed about his wife at the Globes. “It’s a humbling thing when you find someone to love, even better if you’ve been waiting your whole life. And when your whole life is 53 years ... Amal, whatever alchemy it is that brought us together, I couldn’t be more proud to be your husband” he said in his acceptance speech.
N'aww. We're gushing about Amal and we don't even know her.
