The fashion world has always had a soft spot for the slogan tee, whether it's Katharine Hamnett's iconic protest shirts in the Eighties or the wave of political shirts (women's rights, trans rights, you name it) that ruled runways in the late 2010s. Maybe that's why, in a bid to do something positive and productive in these increasingly strange times, brands and celebrities alike are turning to the message-sending garment to fight Covid-19.
Henrietta Rix and Orlagh McCloskey, co-founders of influencer-favorite RIXO, wanted to create something that would allow them, and the RIXO community, to support NHS workers during the crisis. So they've released a special, 'Stay Home' shirt with 10% of all profits from online sales going to the charity Age UK and 50% of profits going to NHS Charities. Tag @rixo on instagram to spread the message - and show others how you're styling yours.
Meanwhile, Sandro has launched the Sandro Takes Care initiative with a charity tee to raise money for the Red Cross. The brand is also repurposing shirt scraps to make 10,000 reusable tissue masks for French and American hospitals, nursing homes and organisations caring for disabled people to release much-needed government-approved masks for frontline medical staff.
Harry Styles has also joined in the relief efforts, making a 'Stay Home Stay Safe' tee that aims to encourage his fans to self-isolate and donate, with 100% of proceeds going to the WHO's Covid-19 Solidarity Response Fund.
Styles penned a personal message to followers with its launch: 'In times like these, it is more important than ever to remember the power of people. If you are able to help, please donate where you can. 100% of the profits of this T-shirt will go towards fighting Covid-19. Stay home, self-isolate, and protect each other. Treat People With Kindness - H'.
The charity app Kindred has released a rainbow 'Thank You' tee with the aim to raise £5m for the NHS through its sales. ASOS, meanwhile, released unisex 'Hereos' tees and hoodies, which sold out within half an hour (stay tuned for the re-stock). Not only will 100% of sales be going directly to the NHS, but ASOS have vowed to match all profits made from each sale to donate to UK hospitals.
