The task of getting dressed is proving to be a bit of a minefield at the moment. Some people are bundled up in opaque tights and yeti-style outerwear while others are clinging onto bare legs and T-shirts. Personally, we're somewhere in the middle, but our gut tells us that this week is a seasonal turning point, the moment every year when you think, 'I really need to buy some winter boots.'
The definitive drop in temperatures might be a good thing. Instead of umming and ahhing over whether or not to dig out your winter coat, just dig it out. And with it, your thickest socks, snuggest hat and softest gloves. Once you've had a good rummage, you'll know exactly what you need to plug the gaps in your winter accessories wardrobe. (FYI, if you're still looking for that all-important coat, Reserved's wool-blend style (singled-breasted in smart grey) is a great all-rounder for £79.99.)
On truly bitter mornings, a shearling-lined pair of boots will make it possible to leave the house. Penelope Chilvers' Cosmos Suede Boot is our absolute favourite for its heavy-duty sole and criss-cross laces. Wear them with these rather jazzy socks (in a very autumnal colour palette of rust and navy) from Toast. Speaking of seasonal colours, it doesn't get any more 'autumn' than this checkered scarf from Acne Studios. And finally, if you're not quite ready for the full immersion of a balaclava, Begg x Co's Bi-Colour Beanie (made of cashmere and seemingly resistant to pilling) will be right up your street.
