Right now, Demna Gvasalia is the most influential designer in Paris. Haven't heard of him? Then take note.
He’s the head honcho of cult label Vetements and chief troublemaker in the rise of the anti-establishment spirit that just took Paris Fashion Week – breaking the rules with outsized sportswear, cowboy boots and voluminous tea dresses. The noise around Vetements is such that his £880 jeans (yes, you read that right) were an instant sell-out.
The cool, non-posh, street-inspired Vetements ethos also won Gvasalia the creative directorship of Balenciaga – also just shown in Paris, and roundly felt to be the most awe-inspiring collection of the week.
But here’s the thing – for Gvasalia, it’s all about six magic pieces. ‘What do we need? A pencil skirt, a hoodie, a trench coat, a sweatshirt, jeans, a dress,’ he told US Vogue’s March issue. These are the essential life-abiding pieces, he said.
So here, we ask the question, would his six-piece-mantra apply to real-life shopping now? Because surely that’s the best thing about the Vetements look – simple classics, well made, are worth celebrating.
