If you’re one of those lucky people jetting off on holiday for some winter sun before 2019 comes to a close, you’ll probably already be very aware of how difficult it is to buy beachwear out of season. For some reason, the high street seems to think we only want to purchase holiday clothes during the summer months, when in reality, we travel at all times of year.

The answer? The internet, of course.

But with a plethora of dedicated beachwear sites to choose from, deciding what to buy can be tricky. Which is why we’ve recruited Lily Russo, one half of the mother and daughter act behind BeachFlamingo.com (and a former Grazia girl to boot), for her tips and tricks for buying swimwear; we’ve got the inside scoop on how to be the chicest girl on the beach this winter. Here are her expert tips...

What five pieces should every woman have in her holiday capsule wardrobe?

  1. A bandeau bikini – great for tanning

  2. A classic triangle – to avoid getting a white patch in the middle from your bandeau bikini

  3. A white bikini and...

  4. A black bikini - both classics

  5. A one piece – to take you from beach to bar and to be worn with a chic wrap skirt or wide leg trousers.

What are your favourite swimwear brands?

I love skimpy bikini bottoms and my current favourite is Reina Olga. The fabric is super soft, they don’t dig in and most importantly are really fun. Australian designer Camilla has really expanded her swimwear offering which means you can now get her beautiful prints on a bikini or one-piece. Honestly wearing her amazing prints just makes you smile.

What are your thoughts on statement swimwear and tan lines?

I am all about the tan lines or should I say lack of tan lines. My pet peeve is wearing a dress with huge white stripes across my shoulders or back. Statement swimwear is best kept for pool parties, overcast days or beach to bar events.

What are your top five tips for buying swimwear?

  1. Try on at home – There is nothing worse than poor lighting and distorting mirrors when trying on swimwear so shopping online or trying your purchases in the comfort of your own home has always been how I like to shop.Size up - No one likes to buy a larger size unless they really have to, but the sizing of many swimwear brands comes up smaller than normal. Feeling like your bikini bottoms are digging in won’t make you feel at ease when you are trying to enjoy your holiday and munch your way through a club sandwich around the pool so try to not think of what size you are buying, just what looks best.Know your shape – If you aren’t sure what shape best suits you having a trying on session. Not every style bikini or one piece is going to suit you, but once you find a certain shape or designer that does, stick to it. It will make swimwear shopping a lot easier and fun. Each designer has a unique style so find one you love and stick to it.Colour – I always drawn to beautiful nudes or crazy colours but not every colour suits my skin tone. I always save my white bikinis for the second half of the holiday once I have a tan and opt for softer shades to begin with. If you are heading off on a short break and won’t have much tanning time prints are always a lot more forgiving.Invest – Spending on swimwear is always worth it. Despite its size a bikini is often more technical and complicated to make than say a dress or coat. A lot goes into make well-made swimwear, in great fabrics that will hug your curves instead of sagging and is always money well spent. The confidence you will have when looking and feeling great on the beach is priceless.
