Mother Nature, and the pastoral, has been a rich spring of inspiration for Burberry's Riccardo Tisci, but for AW21, he looked to another mother entirely: his own.
After today's digital show, which was staged and filmed in the heritage brand's store on Regent Street, and opened with a spoken-word performance by singer, songwriter and rapper Shygirl, Tisci explained via a press release: 'Throughout my life, my mother has been this incredible force of nature. As a single parent, she raised me and my eight sisters with unfaltering purpose and pride. So, naturally, I have always been drawn to strong women and, in turn, they have also given me the confidence to express my own femininity.'
What this looked like was, in Tisci words, a kind of 'modern armour'. The gilded opening looks were comprised of layers of gold clothing that looked both highly protective and highly decorative, something we can all get behind now.
Flashes of colour started to appear, with tomato red tailoring standing out as the killer look for heading back into suiting, and a colour-blocked dress with triangles of peacock, emerald, grey and chartreuse that brought to mind this green and pleasant land's countryside.
(Incidentally, and rather fittingly, the presentation was certified carbon-neutral by offsetting emissions through Burberry's Regeneration Fund, and is in line with the brand's goal to be carbon-neutral in its own operational energy use by 2022, as well as using 100% renewable energy in the same time frame.)
With waist-down dressing now firmly on the cards, Tisci took the opportunity to spotlight accessories. Giant tote bags were slung over shoulders; mini metallic cases (just big enough for AirPods, or a couple of pounds perhaps) were worn as rings; and his signature sock boots appeared with almost every look.
'There’s an underlying attitude to the collection that’s very British; of being unique, eccentric and totally authentic in how you express yourself,' said Tisci.
