It's all well and good for me to drone on about excellent summer trends that will enable you to romp around fields bathed in sunlight or skip barefoot along an idyllic coastline. But what you really want to know, I know, is what to wear that feels new and fresh but that won't leave you with the closest thing to hypothermia the month of May has ever seen.
Well, the trend currently dominating mood boards everywhere (or maybe that's just my hobby) will fulfill all of the above criteria – and then some. It's not a new invention for summer, but never before has it been quite so prolific on the scene – and in spring, too. But Broderie Anglaise – that pretty, embroidered lace – is currently taking the form of dresses, blouses, co-ords and skirts, everywhere from Ganni to Mango. For ASOS, it's been a huge seller – in March alone, the brand sold over 90,000 broderie pieces and predicts that this will only increase as we inch forward to summer.
Don't think it's just traditional white or cream items, either. This year, broderie has been given an update, as ASOS'sown extensive range illustrates. Melika Imoru, head of design for the brand said: "Originally we loved anything broderie as part of the neutral tones trend in true cotton and milk maid light weight fabrics. But after seeing broderie in neons and fun brights we couldn’t resist adding them into the collection too."
Lindex, too, is a high street brand banking on broderie. Several pieces feature in its new collection, which is a collaboration with Swedish designer By Malina, whose designs have recently been worn by the Duchess of Cambridge.
You don't need to save it for high summer, either. Try a broderie blouse with jeans and a cardi now, or a dress with ankle boots. And just think – come summer, you'll be ready 9and waiting) for a heatwave.
