If you’re feeling uninspired as you glance from wintry window and back into your wardrobe again, look no further than the streets of NYFW for your inspiration. Experts in luscious layers, the style pack have nailed Fashion As Armour. Here are the new rules...

1. HUGE oversized coats

The thicker the fuzzier the better but most notably, LONG is where it’s at! Super drape-y, bulky and slouchy is the way forward for outerwear.

**2. Offset your opaques **

Make your black tights/leggings/ trusty black skinnies sing rather than disappear – team them with contrasting light or white shoes, skirts and more.

3. Thigh-high boots

These can be defined as extra elegant leg armour. Even better when they fit beneath a skirt without showing a slither of flesh, whilst warmer, this also gives more of a strange sculpted-shoe-cum- trouser effect that somehow really works.

**4. Dare to flare **

OR choose a wide-leg. Imagine the amount of thermals you can fit under these babies? Not to mention their uber on-trend ‘70s appeal. Beaut.

5. Super scarf

A scarf may be an obvious choice for a winter warmer, yes. But this isn’t just any scarf. And it’s all in how you tie it. It needs to be so huge it’s verging on blanket territory and needs to be double wrapped around your person – preferably your chin. Note the lack of dangling long bits (bar VB’s elegantly dishevelled version)? This is more like a wooly rubber ring for your face – ESSENTIAL in the blizzard.

6. Roll neck

The roll neck sweater du jour rather resembles a neck brace. Need we repeat – these fashion fancies are basically your armour; make sure they’re hardy enough.

7. Snuggle down in shearling

There’s a specifically oversized Dad-ish look to the shearling jacket of the moment. It must be bomber shaped, with giant wide lapels that gape open over slim-line and simple outfit. There’s a hint of the ‘70s boho trend here but with a good sampling of late ‘80s Dell Boy too – the key to this jacket is in its urbanity.
