I hate to tell you this, but it's coat weather. Don't worry, that Indian summer we're promised every September is apparently arriving next week but in the meantime, I'm wrapping up. Even if I hadn't caught an early autumn chill, I do think it's a good time to start thinking about your outerwear options for autumn and winter, largely because all the best coats start arriving now and sell out in no time at all. Case in point is Boden's new capsule collection that launches today, inspired by some truly great British women.
Boden's main focus for AW19 is British creativity, the pinnacle of which is a 30-piece collection of coats, inspired by 'remarkable British women who dared to be different,' according to a press release from the brand. These women include Jane Austen, Ada Lovelace, Emily Brontë, Boudica (!) and Frances Burney, the novelist, diarist and playwright who was one of the first women to write openly about having breast cancer. Rose Blake, British artist and illustrator, has also created a series of portraits to accompany the collection.
'Behind every great coat is a great woman,' says Boden. While it has to be said that I'm struggling slightly with the connection between Ada Lovelace, daughter of Lord Byron and the first ever computer programmer, and a colourblock wool-blend coat, I'm sold entirely on the actual coats themselves. There are red coats with leopard print, faux fur collars (for Jane Austen, obviously), a maxi coat available in grey or camel with flashes of colour, the aforementioned colour block coat that is as lovely for special occasions as it is just every day and a checked button-down that Boudica herself may have worn.*
Only a few have been released so far, and there are some real jewels still to come, including a cosy Teddy coat that is sure to sell fast.
As my first foray into the very idea of a coat since June, possibly, Boden's capsule collection is a lovely way to embrace the prospect of shorter days and colder weather. If we can claim to be channeling Jane Austen as we do so, then I'd consider that to be a bonus.
*This claim is unsubstantiated.
