It's one of the biggest-selling singles of all time but an American jury has decided that 'Blurred Lines' plagiarised a Marvin Gaye track.

Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke have been ordered to pay the family of the late soul singer a whopping £4.8m ($7.3m) in damages.

The musical dream team deny copying Gaye's 1977 hit 'Got To Give It Up' and said that the ruling set a 'horrible precedent'.

The 2013 hit, which earned a Grammy nomination, made more than £10.8m in profits and made more than £3m for Pharell and Robin.

But despite the pay-out, Marvin Gaye's family, who have owned the copyright to his music since his death in 1984, are trying to stop any future sales of the record.

The family lawyer told* Rolling Stone *: 'We'll be asking the court to enter an injunction prohibiting the further sale and distribution of Blurred Lines unless and until we can reach an agreement with those guys on the other side about how future monies that are received will be shared.'

While the track may have made serious cash for Pharrell and Robin (and seemingly still enjoys constant play on dancefloors around the globe) the single has also been a bit of a headache for the boys too.

Aside from furore over the 'rapey' lyrics, the risque video which featured models bouncing around topless and writhing on the fully dressed men caused controversy and was slammed for being sexist and the distorting the lines of sex and content.

Then there was that MTV VMAs performance in 2013 - Miley Cyrus, her foam finger and her tongue twerking up against Robin is an image we can't erase from our memory even if we tried.

And things went from bad to worse for Thicke when it was revealed that he and wife Paula had split.

But back to the legal issue. Here are the two tracks - in case you want to make your own decision.
