Nice top and jeans

The year is 2007, Rihanna's Umbrella is playing on repeat as you get ready for a night out with the girls. Your outfit? A cute top with jeans, of course. Chances are you go for skinny jeans, the top is one-shouldered and you complete the look with a pair of mega hoop earrings and a waist belt. Are we right? Thought so. Well, news just in, this classic outfit combination is back for 2023. That's right, dust off your asymmetric tops because every celebrity and street-styler is making a case for the early '00s trend to make a return. So how do you wear one-shoulder tops this time around? Let us fill you in.

While RiRi wore her sequinned, rainbow knit top with skinny jeans that were too long for her and questionable court heels(they're also making a return, FYI), we can confirm skinny jeans are not the way to wear it for 2023. Why? To ensure your look doesn't look like an actual outfit from 2007.

The nice top and jeans ensemble of course dates back way further than 2007. It was a '90s and Y2K favourite, because if it ain't broke! Buffy The Vampire Slayer's Sarah Michelle Gellar was a style icon in 2002, and here you can see how she wore a lace dipped hem – a key detail at this time – top with low-rise jeans. And yep, love it or hate it, these jeans have also made a comeback.

Getting the belt memo, Alicia Keys wore her embellished jeans (we've seen similar in Zara recently) with a red one-shouldered top complete with long hanging tie – this is making us feel so nostalgic. Of course the look was topped off with a matchy-matchy baker boy hat.

While we hope these hats don't make a return anytime soon, for 2023, baggy jeans are most certainly back.

Kylie and Kendall Jenner, Bella and Gigi Hadid are all fans, and they're surprisingly easy to wear. Influencer Xenia Adonts wears her light-wash jeans with a one-shoulder top, chunky flats and a clutch bag. And we're firm fans of this high/low look you can take on a night out or on a brunch date.

This year, so many people are also wearing asymmetric tops with maxi skirts, cargo pants and joggers, and Ashley Graham styled hers during London Fashion Week with a sparkly mini and Gucci heels. Because a 'nice top' isn't just a one trick pony, there are so many outfit opportunities to be had.
