The 1990s gave us a lot of things: Friends, Kate Moss, The Spice Girls... But none of those things are currently experiencing a fashion renaissance in the same way that square-toed sandals are.
That's right, the minimal, squared-off shoes that frequented many a red carpet back in the 90s are back, in a major way. This all really kicked off thanks to the complete hysteria that surrounded Topshop's Strippy heels. Minimal, strappy, square and with a low-heel, they landed in both red and black for £46 – only to sell out almost immediately. Countless articles were written, Instagram posts appeared and Topshop had to restock. According to a spokesperson for the brand, black has been the most popular colour and three new styles will be landing in May – in lime, snake and off-white.
Even before Topshop, however, brands were raiding the 90s archives and creating their own versions of square toes. By Far and Jacquemus led the way, followed swiftly by Rejina Pyo and LA-based brand Loq. Since then, several high street brands have been quietly filling their shelves with these sandals, and now we can think of little else.
Picture this: a hot, sunny bank holiday. You're wearing cropped jeans and a button-down blouse, a glass of icy lemonade in your hand. On your feet: a pair of square-toed sandals. It's like a really good day in 1998, but with Instagram.
