The trend du jour (or oggi, we should say) from Milan should be welcome news for those who fly in the face of the 'natural' look. That's right, while we did see a few sheer, glossy eyelids and the odd slick of brown mascara, we also celebrated the return of the smokey eye. Shunned last season in favour of a statement lip, backstage at Versace, Just Cavalli and Etro we spotted a number of sultry, smokey looks that embraced the darker side. Trust the Italians to seriously sex things up.
At Versace, deep teal and grey lined the girls' lower lashes, while a more matte grey or bronze sat atop their lids, giving a futuristic twist to the classic smoke. At Cavalli, the smokey eye met with fashion's favourite technique, contouring, to create a sculpted look in soft brown that was both muted and chic. Finally, at Etro, grey softly fanned out from the model's upper lashlines in a more traditional smokey eye formation that warmed our often-jaded hearts.
We’re happy to see fashion embrace makeup for once, rather than single out a few trends (nude nails, no makeup makeup and ‘undone’ hair) and use them season after season. After all, who the only statement makeup that’s chic is a red lip? As smokey eyes are often the most seemingly-difficult nut to crack, we thought we'd share with you our three favourite YouTube tutorials to make the whole thing a bit simpler.
