In no way can I present pearls as something new, nor are they even a trend. They have, after all, been worn since Julius Caesar decided they were acceptable (although only for the upper echelons of society). They are, however, having what some people in fashion might describe as a 'moment'.
From Givenchy and Dior to Gucci and, most recently, Chanel's Metiers D'Art show, it's clear that pearly accessories are a prominent fixture on both catwalks and street stylers alike. The last cohort of show-goers wore theirs on everything from jewellery to bags via a multitude of hair accessories.
Perhaps it's a status thing, which harks all the way back to Caesar's stringent dictats on jewellery. Or, it could be because no matter what you're wearing, they seem to make everything look chic, purposeful and just generally more considered.
Don't have time to do your hair? Put in some pearly slides and you suddenly look like you're having the best hair day of your life. Want to have the comfort of your favourite jeans and jumper but still want to look like you've tried? Layer a few strings of costume pearls over your knitwear.
I could go on because, frankly, there's a multitude of ways in which to wear them – they're no longer confined to simple pearl studs in ears. But don't take my word for it, take the word of Shrimps' pretty hairbands, Anita Berisha's pearl choker and Anthropologie's oversized earrings. Even your oldest pair of jeans will have never looked so good...
