Lizzy Dening is in the grips of a winter wardrobe addiction – and the current Autumn Winter trend for all things fluffy is fur-filling her cosiest dreams…
I’ve always been fanatical about fur – and yes, before PETA gets on my fluffy back, I’m talking about the faux variety – so much so that one of my (supposed) BFFs once described my personal style as ‘slutty grandma’, thanks to a penchant for leopard print. But it really does take some beating in the snug-yet-glamorous stakes. Hear me out:
1. It’s warm. I know that fashion is at least 20 per cent about being a bit uncomfortable, but when you suffer from bad circulation like I do (defrosting the car = personal hell) it’s nice when you can spend money on a coat that goes some way towards thawing your kidneys out.
2. It’s stylish. Ok, so I suspect it was the real McCoy rather than the synthetic fuzz of today, but nonetheless there’s something supremely glam about images of Hollywood goddesses, from Marilyn to Audrey, wrapped up in their fancy furs. I mean, just look. Now tell me you don’t aspire to that level of cosiness.
3. It’s fun. This season is my dream come true. I feel like a cross between Mariah and Verruca Salt on Net-A-Porter right now – THERE’S JUST SO MUCH FUR AND I WANT IT ALL! From the crazy brights of Shrimps and Charlotte Simone, to patchwork at Topshop Unique, via monochrome DKNY stripes…it’s all too much for dedicated followers of fur-shion.
Of course, as with any FROW-worthy trend, there are admittedly downsides. While not as smelly as the shearling coats of the 1970s, faux is definitely not built for wet days (but that’s what umbrellas are for), or home washing (but who has the time, anyway?) and some of the paler shades get filthy pretty fast (yeti-chic?) but really who cares? You’re warm, you’re on trend, and you feel great to cuddle.
