If you've been blessed with big feet, you might not relish shoe shopping (or consider it much of a blessing). There's just no getting around the fact that most high street retailers only go up to a size 8, maybe a 9 at a push, but 10, 11, 12? Forget it. Until now that is. ASOS Design has teamed up with TTYA - Taller Than Your Average, the size-inclusive clothing and lifestyle label that caters to taller women founded by Irene Agbontaen - to create a shoe collection that carries the widest range of sizes to ever be stocked at ASOS. And this isn't footwear that fades into the background - it's very much designed to stand out.
In fact, out of the nine styles available as of today, seven have heels. That's right, being tall doesn't mean you should resign yourself to flats, at least not if you're Agbontaen, for whom this marks her first foray into footwear. 'One of the TTYA mantras is to 'Stand Tall'. It’s about celebrating and owning who you are, often being tall we are taught to shrink ourselves. I’ve learnt to take something that was previously thought of as a negative and made it my blessing! Your height is your super power, never forget that,' she tells Grazia.
Standing at 5'11" herself, Agbontaen's favourite shoe in the collection is the over-the-knee boot, a real show-stopper that has a pointed toe and stiletto heel that stands at 11cm. They are the perfect for wearing with miniskirts or adding some sex appeal to swishing minidresses. 'There’s something for everyone that compliments every skin tone,' says Agbontaen, 'With prices starting at £30, the collection is inclusive, affordable, and accessible!' Other key styles, in our eyes, are the slingback ballet flats embellished with oversized bows - ideal for zhushing up some ankle-length jeans or even practical but slightly boring black trousers - available in black and hot pink satin.
And with high-heeled satin courts in frosted peppermint green, black velvet sandals studded with diamanté and a pair of fabulous mesh boots, Christmas party season can't come soon enough, particularly if you've never been able to shop a shoe that counts as a 'party heel' until now. 'The TTYA ethos was built around an inclusive space for the excluded girl. I started the brand out of sheer frustration, never really fitting into the fashion conversation.' Thanks to Agbontaen, shoe shopping is going to be an entirely different experience.
