There are times when fashion presents trends which are outlandish, unwearable and, sometimes, downright bizarre (I won't name names). Happily, this is not one of those times. Instead, I'm here to inform you that an item so mundane you've possibly overlooked it, has become something of a status symbol – and certainly the cool girl's accessory of choice. It is, of course, the baseball cap.
Once mainly worn by gym-goers and in-disguise celebrities fleeing the paparazzi, the baseball cap's fashion renaissance is largely thanks to Celine, where it was firmly front and centre of the brand's spring/summer 2021 catwalk show. Since then, it has not only been adopted by many other fashion houses keen to cash in on the cap's cult status, it's also become ubiquitous on the heads of every It girl from Gigi Hadid to Sienna Miller via Rihanna.
Rain or shine, summer or winter, the cap has proved itself to be an all-weather winner, worn with everything from jeans and casual jackets to sharp tailoring and even, in the case of J.Lo, a satin jumpsuit, which she paired with a leather baseball cap from Coach.
Rihanna even wore Dior's own style to the Maison's Haute Couture show in January this year. If anyone can wear a cap to couture, it's Rihanna.
In terms of selling power, the cap has that in spades it seems. Last year, caps from Loro Piana and Ralph Lauren were identified by the Lyst Index as two of 2023's most in-demand products, while M&S saw huge success from its £12.50, vintage-feel cap, as seen on Sienna Miller in the brand's campaign (and now back in stock).
Part of the appeal, other than avoiding a bad hair day, is that the cap acts as an entry-level accessory for many looking to buy into their favourite fashion brand. Much like the slogan T-shirt before it, the cap is an easy way to show allegiance to a particular label, school of thought or – judging by the ongoing popularity of the New York Yankees cap – a sports team.
In fact, the Yankees hat is still so beloved that Swarovski has just reimagined it in crystals as part of a limited-edition collaboration, sadly only available in the US.
Don't worry, though, there are plenty of caps – many of them endorsed by the A-list – to be had on this side of the Atlantic. From designer logos to embroidered slogans to plain styles, there's certainly a cap for every mood. This is particularly good news as we face April showers.
