There are times when fashion presents trends which are outlandish, unwearable and, sometimes, downright bizarre (I won't name names). Happily, this is not one of those times. Instead, I'm here to inform you that an item so mundane you've possibly overlooked it, has become something of a status symbol – and certainly the cool girl's accessory of choice. It is, of course, the baseball cap.

Once mainly worn by gym-goers and in-disguise celebrities fleeing the paparazzi, the baseball cap's fashion renaissance started back in 2020. Celine put the humble accessory front and centre of its spring/summer 2021 catwalk show - and, since then, it has not only been adopted by many other fashion houses keen to cash in on the cap's cult status, it's also become ubiquitous on the heads of every well-dressed woman (and man: Pedro Pascal, Pharrell Williams and Harry Styles are all cap wearers).

The latest fan of the sporty accessory is Jodie Turner-Smith, whose cap was embroidered with two words that speak volumes: 'Ritz Paris'. Pairing the navy style with an unassuming tank top, high-waisted jeans and another flex in the form of biking shades by Gucci, it was definitive proof that baseball caps have entered the fashion leagues.

Hailey Bieber often uses a baseball cap to crown a leather jacket and loafers combo, with a number of styles in a repertoire that includes Mercedes-Benz, Nike, Fila and Emma Mulholland. She pretty much wears them with anything, which brings us nicely onto the next point about baseball caps. Rain or shine, summer or winter, it's an all-weather winner, pairing with jeans, casual jackets and trainers but also with leather, sharp tailoring and floral dresses that might need a bit of bite.

Part of the appeal, other than avoiding a bad hair day, is that the cap acts as an entry-level accessory for many looking to buy into their favourite fashion brand. Much like the slogan T-shirt before it, the cap is an easy way to show allegiance to a particular label, school of thought or – judging by the ongoing popularity of the New York Yankees cap – a sports team. Zoë Kravitz's cap of choice? A black-and-white style that reads 'The New York Times'.

Don't worry, though, there are plenty of caps – many of them endorsed by the A-list – to be had on this side of the Atlantic. From designer logos to embroidered slogans to plain styles, there's certainly a cap for every mood. This is particularly good news as we face a week of on-and-off showers.
