Sometimes, there are pieces of clothing which just seem to capture our collective imagination. Recently, one such piece was acosy cardigan from Sezane, which sold over 30,000 times. This week's hot ticket item? Well, it's decidedly less cosy but might help to get you in the mood for Christmas party season.

The item in question is this halter neck, cross-front dress from ASOS. It's available in 25 variations, including velvet, retro patterns, animal prints and classic black and also comes in both mini and midi lengths. Despite being bodycon (read: much harder to wear than a cosy cardigan), it has been purchased many times already. 53,000 times, to be precise.

That's a lot of dresses. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that, having been deprived of celebrations last year, we're all more than ready to shake off the last 12 months even momentarily by dressing up and sharing a convivial moment with our favourite people.

It more than likely has even more to do with the price tag of this particular dress. The shorter styles are £12, with the midi priced at £18. Given that it can be worn in a variety of different ways, as Instagram has shown, this is quite impressive value for money.

Of course, this really feels like the worst time to be encouraging even more shopping than usual as we face an urgent climate crisis. So, I'd suggest you only become the next one of 53,000 to buy this dress if you know you'll wear it far beyond one party season.

Given fashion's new focus on mini hemlines and flesh-flashing styles – a far cry from the high necklines, frilled collars and Little Women-inspired aesthetic which has dominated trends for several seasons now – these dresses won't be going out of style any time soon.
