‘Even Now I Can Feel The Shame!’ Anne Hathaway On The Hathahaters And That Oscars Dress

At Awards Season in 2013 the internet was flooded with both Jennifer Lawrence GIFs and Tweets by 'Hathahaters' (read: Anne Hathaway haters). Two years later, Anne Hathaway has spoken about the backlash during awards season in an interview with Harper's Bazaar.

The actress recalls googling 'Anne Hathaway' for a* Funny or Die* skit on pregnancy rumours the day after the Golden Globes. What she found was a story called 'Why Does Everyone Hate Anne Hathaway?' She said she felt like she had been "punched in the gut," and "shocked and slapped and embarrassed. Even now I can feel the shame."

"What are we supposed to do—pretend like it didn't happen?" the 31-year-old actress says in the interview. "People treated me a certain way. But I've grown from it. This whole thing has made me a way more compassionate and loving person. And I don't feel sorry for myself." She added: "I was in crisis. Now I'd be fine. I really would be. I'd let it roll off my back, but at the time I was still partly Fantine. I was still identifying with being a victim."

You'd think an Oscar would secure plenty of roles, but Anne said: "I had directors say to me, 'I think you're great. You're perfect for this role, but I don't know how audiences will accept you because of all this stuff, this baggage."

She also opened up about the last minute dress swap from Valentino to Prada. "I found a dress, like a month before," she explains. "It was the most beautiful, reflective, shimmery dress—rainbows were going to dance off me."

However at the Oscars rehearsal she realised Amanda Seyfried was wearing a lilac version of the same dress by Alexander McQueen. Anne Hathaway recalls it being 10 o'clock the night before the Oscars: "I didn't have a friggin' dress, which I normally wouldn't care about … But I really needed a dress, and everybody hates me, and I just really needed a dress."

She found the pink satin Prada gown she ended up wearing on the morning of the Oscars: "I was like, 'Wow! I can do this. It's beautiful. It's appropriate. It's modern. It's minimal.'" She added: "I look in the mirror, turn to Adam, and say, 'It looks like my nipples are hard.' He says, 'You look beautiful. Your nipples look pointy. The red carpet's about to close. We gotta go.' "
