When I was 10, I had a prized possession. It was not sentimental, nor was it a thing of beauty. It was a pair of Adidas tracksuit trousers, which were transformed into something entirely more theatrical simply thanks to the presence of a few popper buttons running down the side of each leg. Adidas Poppers. Oh, we had some good times together. There was the time I used my pocket money to buy B*Witched's debut single – C'est La Vie, obviously – and proceeded to practice 'Irish dancing' (I'm sorry) in my bedroom, trousers unpopped, legs and arms flying, unbridled joy coursing through my veins. Or the last non-uniform day of primary school, where I collected compliments for my Adidas Poppers and thought I had reinvented myself as the cool kid of year 6 (I had not). You can imagine, then, my excitement upon seeing that, as of yesterday, track pants with poppers have once again been given fashion's seal of approval.
Any eagle-eyed readers, or indeed any fellow Adidas Poppers enthusiasts out there (hi!), may be keen to point out that this triumphant renaissance actually began a few years ago. In 2016, inexplicably, the world's celebrities bestowed their favour on one of the best things to emerge from the '90s. Rihanna and Kim Kardashian, both of notable influence, suddenly started wearing some popper-sided tracksuit bottoms. Then, in 2018, the likes of Bella and Gigi Hadid followed suit. Now? Hailey Bieber has been spotted in a green-and-yellow striped number in LA.
Good grief. It never occured to me that my beloved Adidas trousers would reach such dizzy sartorial heights. But here we are. Is it any wonder, then, that we're now looking to wear the very same item of clothing once chosen by the nation's number one hun, Natalie Cassidy, for a red carpet event? No, it surely is not.
Want to know how to style them? Well, a friend (me at 10) told me they work really well with Groovy Chick T-shirts and Tammy Girl socks.
