Whenever a mega-star fashion designer launches a collection in H&M there are endless queues, all-night vigils and scuffles over the limited number of pieces per person. But the H&M design award, now in its fourth year, never seems to cause the same hoo-ha, which is weird, because the awards have proved adept at rooting out the best newcomer design talent from around the world and putting it on the high street. Which means we can wear fresh fashion from clever young thangs without having to eat beans on toast for weeks.

The shortlist for next year’s award has just been announced, with 24 designers keen to win the cash prize of €50,000 and the chance to create a collection for the Swedish retailer. The winner will be announced in January, but in the meantime, here are the names on the list that you’re going to want to know about, like now.

**Clara Jungman Malmquist **

A graduate from Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts, who is big on bright colours and fun textures. We reckon she would create some non-boring coats for next autumn.

**Magdalena Brozda **

Unusual textiles are Brozdas speciality, which means even more brilliant H&M festival wear.

**Peter Do **

We already want one of Peter Do’s monochrome bombers or trench coats. Enough said.

**Graham Fan **

Fan just graduated from London’s Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, with a super-luxe collection full of shiny-shinies. We want him to design edgy party dresses that don’t feel twee or body-con-tastic.

James Kelly

We reckon James Kelly, a graduate of The Royal College of Art, would create some seriously good shaggy knitwear for next winter.
