In an interview with Vogue only 48 hours before his Yeezy Season 4 presentation – one of the first shows of New York Fashion Week – Kanye West said ‘I’m really not here for controversy.'
Cue nothing but controversy in the wake of the show.
After the buzz of Yeezy Season 3 which saw West launch his collection in Madison Square Garden alongside his album, The Life of Pablo, there were high hopes which, it seems, were pretty swiftly dashed.
Here's what went down.
1. It was way out of town
The entire event was shrouded in secrecy: guests were told to to go to an address where a bus (with zero entertainment or refreshments) would take them to an undisclosed location, (and which they later discovered was Roosevelt Island) at 1.30pm for the 3pm start. So, uh, it was a* little bit* out of the way.
2. It was running very late
Fashionista reports that attendees were told that the show was delayed until 4pm. Not ideal considering the high temperatures – it was about 30 degrees celsius – and the lack of shade or water. It was apparently around another 40 minutes until the actual show began with Kim Kardashian-West and Kendall and Kylie Jenner turning up over an hour late.
3. Models were kept standing in the heat with no water
Once allowed in (apparently the security was nothing short of aggressive) over a hundred models were standing on the field in wearing the Yeezy range. And as journalists looked on, some models began to sit down.
Some are even said to have fainted possibly due to dehydration and Stella Bugbee, Editorial Director of *The Cut *live tweeted her no-holds-barred disgust at the show and the treatment of the models.
Here's hoping this was part of an elaborate performance.
4. The clothes were, um, distinctly average
We're talking cut-out body suits in neutral tones, oversized hoodies and lots of over the knee boots. Which, according to Fashionista, apparently many models found it difficult to walk in.
5. He caused controversy even before the show
On September 3rd, West tweeted the following casting call for his show and received a lot of back lash.
During the Vogue interview, Kanye addressed the backlash saying that he had not intended to exclude anyone, asking 'How do you word the idea that you want all variations of black? How do you word that exactly?'
All in all, the show did not go well.
