What do the designers behind Gucci, Miu Miu and Lacoste have in common? Wes Anderson movie marathon nights… or so we’d imagine when looking to the runways of autumn/winter 2015. The film director’s meticulously arranged, retro-inspired, quirky visual feasts (no prop, colour or even collar is ever left to chance) have provided more than a few fashion moments for the new season.
The two leading fashion characters come courtesy of cult classic, The Royal Tenenbaums: Richie’s wildcard combination of tennis gear and tailoring has been adopted by both Lacoste and Bally, whilst over at Gucci you’d easily spy his coolest sibling, Margot, in old-fashioned nana coats flung nonchalantly over slip-of-a-thing dresses. Then there’s the sweet, ‘60s-tinged mini-dresses of Moonrise Kingdom’s leading girl Suzy that, tada!, have been made luxe and significantly more grown-up for Miu Miu’s modern mavens.
If this all sounds a bit theatrical, relax. The catwalk’s interpretation of Anderson’s dysfunctional but well-dressed cast is less about complicated costume design and more about styling – look to Gucci for the mix’n’match pointers: a Life Aquatic-style red beanie hat will go surprisingly well with Margot’s trench coat and nerdy brogues, see?
