It feels like no matter what your wearing, if it's black, it's a winner. The only trouble is in summer it feels 10x hotter than anything else and generally can look a bit heavy and wintery. But if done well, you can definitely ace summer dressing with this all round excellent shade. Here's some girls to give you some extra inspo if you're not convinced, or just need a few ideas on how to re-work your staples.

Texture game

Play with the textures and patterns of your stape pieces, a leather skirt with crochet, or prints and metalwork. Looks awesome for a festival too, if you're bored of florals and girly headbands. (@giizeleoliveira)

If in doubt, stripes

Stripes. Always stripes. This dark breton looks ace with a black button a-line, and is a nice take on the usual white and navy. (@meganellaby)

Short and sweet

For a winning combo, raise that hem with a plain t-shirt dress and black accessories. A combo made for hangovers. (@wethepeoplestyle)

Colour pops

Freshen up that tired LBD, by pairing with with your staple black heels and coloured socks. Block shades work well, especially this electric blue with a red lip.

Show some flesh

Nicole Cooper makes light work of the slightly tricky culotte trend, with the midriff on show and of course, all black everything. If you don't want to shell out for a new top, get handy with some black ribbon and criss-cross around the waist to update your existing crop. (@nicolecooperr)

Strappy waist top, £18, Missguided; Culottes, £14.99, New Look; Boots, £75, Topshop; Stone necklace, £12, Urban Outfitters

Keep it airy

A maxi dress is a good summer option, but keep it floaty and not too tight. Finish it all off with killer kicks, as the maxi can easily sway into wedding territory.

Sunglasses, £45, & Other Stories; Roshe Trainers, £70, Nike; Calf length dress, £15, Boohoo

Do the dunga

Slightly scared of dungarees? If you get a chilly day or are heading for a cooler city break this summer, black dungarees will be your failsafe. If it's hot, opt for shorts or skirt dungas. (@thefrugality)

Jersey top, £26.96, Viyella; Dungarees, £45, ASOS; Bag, £11, ASOS

Style your staples

Thought black jeans were a summer no-no? Think again. Mix with a light bomber in dark shades, and don't be afraid to show some ankle. (@igobyfrankie)
