This week sees the release of Dior & I - a documentary which shows the then newly appointed creative director of Dior, Raf Simons, create his first haute couture collection.
In the film we go behind the closed doors of couture, meeting the craftsman in the Atelier who manage to create Raf's collection in just eight weeks. A task that normally requires months of work.
In an exclusive clip you can watch Raf Simons talking about the enormity of what he is undertaking. Raf says of the legacy of the house: "This sounds almost pretentious, I don't want to suggest in any way that I am talented enough to compare myself with Christian Dior. But I do think that the way he approached feminity as an ultimate starting point I found very freeing, because I also found myself in a situation where the audience sees me as a minimalist and I am not. In a way I find it quite surprising."
He continues: "Did I take on a minimal brand? Yes. Does that mean I am only about minimalism? Well let them judge after the show I would say."
As you would expect from a Dior production, the film is simply beautiful. Director Frederic Tcheng was given unprecedented access to show the process (and pressure) of creating such a delicate collection on an emormous scale. From how prints are made to the emotion backstage during the show, it is a special and emotional piece of film.
