When a warm-hearted footballer donated a load of his wife's old clothes to a Women's Aid charity shop just outside Birmingham recently, locals got rather excited. And it's not the first time a bumper crop of second hand goods has appeared to raise money for the ills of the world either - Victoria Beckham once emptying her wardrobe into a British Red Cross shop in Chelsea.

But if everybody knows that the charity shops round Chelsea are going to be full of solid rich-people cast-offs on any given Sunday, where are the other hidden gem charity shops we should be checking out around the UK? The places where the type of people who buy Cruise collections will cast off, well last season's Cruise collection stock?
We asked some very in-the-know locals:
Scotland
'Glad Rags Thrift, Shawlands, South Side, Glasgow is my all time favourite not for profit indie shop. It seems that is the charity shop where good taste sets up camp with old school charity shop pricing. I have purchased many items from here including a cashmere polo for £3 and a gorge cornflower blue trench for just £8.99. With all proceeds helping young Glasweigians get into music, it is not only fashionable but a great cause!' says Sheri Scott, blogger - Betty &Bee
'I'd also recommend the Salvation Army on Dumbarton Road .It's a goldmine full of bargains. They have a small section for clothing also but if you are looking for a 1930's sideboard for under £30 it's definitely the place to go. I managed to find an incredibly rare 1960's Womb chair for just £40 - INCLUDING FOOTSTOOL!'

'The Oxfam on Bold Street in Liverpoolis wonderful. So much great vintage clothes & cheap books,' says @christinamcmc
'Age UK in Withington inManchester is my fave,' according to @becca_DP
'There are a few St Luke’s in Sheffield, but St Luke’s Hospice shop on Abbeydale Road is the best in my opinion. It is FULL of amazing clothes, more at the glamorous granny end of the scale. I don’t mean that badly, if you want a pristine tea dress or quality winter coat, this is your best bet,' says Rachael Gibson, blogger - Fur Coat No Knickers

'Oxfam, on the Western Road is quite out of Brighton town centre so doesn't get a lot of passing trade, but is in a bit of the town which has lots of quite high profile creative people living in it which means that all of the super rare 12" records and fashions that they drop off don't get immediately bought up. I also quite like that they charge a fair price. Not super cheap, but not extortion. It is a charity after all,' says @williamoliver
'Worthing is generally great for charity shops - there's a Cat's Protection League there that has a whole haberdashery section and has some great furniture and knick-knacks. Orpington is charity mecca, my favourite is the Maypole Project which has been done up nicely but the prices are still reasonable,' says Isabelle O'Carroll, blogger - Isabelle OC
'A great charity shop on Gloucester Road in Bristol is Cancer Research UK - it's always bustling on a Saturday morning and they stock a wide selection of menswear, womenswear and a couple of rails of vintage in the back right corner. CLIC Sargent's SHOP on Gloucester Road in Bristol is also great,' according to SJ, blogger - Ship-shape and Bristol Fashion
London
'Cancer Research by Highbury and Islington station for designer samples. My friend once got an actual Chanel bag there for £25!' according to @bethanholt
'Kensington Church St! Poshos dump all their vintage cashmere there,' says @dollyalderton
