Victoria Beckham has come under fire after the model who stars in her new campaign was deemed unacceptably thin.
The image, which stars 29-year-old Lithuanian model Giedre Dukauskaite, is for Beckham’s new eyewear collection. It was shared across her social media platforms at the weekend, with the caption: ‘Start the year with new frames from the Spring Summer 2018 #VBEyewear collection inspired by 1970s retro classics and updated for a feathery-light, fresh and modern look.’
Yet instead of focusing on the new eyewear, some users were unhappy with the size of the model, reopening the debate on the responsibility that designers to their often young and impressionable fans.
‘Ridiculous. These types of images have real consequences for young girls,’ one commented, while another wrote: ‘Why do we continue promoting these unachievable body types for most women? We have millions of young teens already having issues with their weight. Help women embrace their own bodies - be part of the positive change, please!’
Meanwhile others defended the designer, with one writing: ‘So girls who are naturally tall and lean are a negative influence? Beautiful model, style and specs.’
In 2010, Beckham vowed to only use models with a healthy BMI for her catwalk shows. She has so far not commented on the controversy.
