Speaking at the start of Black History Month - via a video interview with the Evening Standard, with whom they’re launching a list of BHM NextGen Trailblazers - Meghan Markle continued her masterclass in waist-up dressing, this time choosing to spotlight Victor Glemaud.
The designer - Haitian-born, New York-based - is celebrated for his leisurewear and knitwear, and has a fan club including Ashley Graham, Issa Rea, Selena Gomez, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (who wore his designs for a photoshoot with Vogue) and Mary J. Blige (who wore the very same knit as Markle’s - the so-called Slash Long Sleeve Top - on the cover of Health Magazine).
It was a timely choice. Glemaud chose Paris Fashion Week, which is underway as we speak, to officially launch In the Blk. The network, which so far includes designers based all over the world such as Virgil Alboh and Stella Jean, aims to help Black designers succeed commercially.
Speaking to BoF, Glemaud said: ‘A lot of Black-owned brands are self-funded, and this means they might not have access to lessons in wholesale or running a direct-to-consumer business. So what I realised was that this business services aspect is something that [In the Blk] can provide.’
The designer has certainly has had a busy lockdown, launching a collection with curve sizing to great acclaim in May - which was modelled by a host of friends over Zoom, according to Vogue - as well as In the Blk.
