One of the best things to happen at the Oscars this year was spotted on the feet of Frances McDormand. Dressed in pink Valentino couture, she wasn’t just one of the trendsetters at this year’s awards, she was a trailblazer – eschewing heels for Birkenstocks. They were bright yellow and, in joyous news, they are now available to buy.
Of all the seemingly left-field footwear collaborations we’ve seen recently – those Balenciaga Crocs, for example, and Y/Project’s thigh-high UGGs – Valentino’s Birkenstocks are actually something we could – and want to – wear. All the comfort of your regular Birkenstocks with the added glitz of Valentino – what’s not to love? That’s rhetorical, obviously.
Pierpaolo Piccioli, Valentino’s creative director, did actually debut his two new Arizona designs at the menswear show earlier this year but it’s only now that they’re available to buy. There’s a plain red pair available for £315 and a black pair with the Valentino logo on the side, which cost £370. They are, however, selling fast, so you may want to get your skates on. Having said that, if your skates aren’t designed by Valentino, it’s probably best not to bother.
