Today might be Black Friday, but the theme continues tomorrow with a new shopping phenomenon about to hit – it’s LBD day. Yes, that’s right, the LBD has its own day of honour, and it’s totally a thing. Debenhams says so. They have conducted research that reveals tomorrow is the day we will all be buying little black dresses – 29 per cent more than usual, in fact.
But why are we still so obsessed with the LBD? And why does this dress, unlike all others, feel like more than just a dress? It’s like a person in our wardrobe with whom we have a love-hate relationship...
So let The Debrief team sum up the pluses and minuses of the trusty LBD this party season:
You Can Choose Your Level Of Vampy-ness
Dress, £125, & Other Stories
Stevie Martin, Staff Writer: ‘Wishing I was Morticia Addams, that’s one reason I love a LBD. But be aware you can end up looking like a pasty goth, so sometimes a LBD requires a lot more maintenance than a bright colour would. There’s that whole fake tanning malarkey that I can never be bothered with.’
There’s No ‘What Colour Goes With What’ Drama
Dress, £89, COS
Chemmie Squier, Editorial Assistant: ‘Whenever I buy a dress I always go for black, no matter how much I want to wear something coloured, because with black you don’t have to spend ages agonising over whether your shoes clash in a fashion way or in a someone-drank-a-pitcher-of-tropical-cocktail-and-vommed-on-you way.’
It Make Us Feel Thin
Dress, £165, French Connection
Lena de Casparis, Acting Deputy Editor: ‘I love that black is slimming, so if you’re having a low day. Plus, big colours are a statement – and sometimes when I walk into a party wearing yellow/pink/anything that’s not black, I end up feeling like I’m some sort of beacon or flashing sign.’
You Never Feel Like You’re In Fancy Dress
Sophie Cullinane, Features Editor At Large: ‘I’m jealous of people who can wear colour without thinking about it, but for me I always feel like I’m in fancy dress when I do. It’s weird because my flat is really colourful and I’m quite loud as a person – maybe black is my way of toning my personality down?!’
Dress, £149, Ted Baker
Sometimes We Forget How To Wear Anything Else
Dress, £119.99, Mango
**Charlie Byrne, Fashion Editor Says: ‘**I am constantly going shopping with the intention of buying colourful clothes, but I always just come back with armfuls of black. It’s got to the stage now where I don’t know how to dress without chucking some black things together, and my confidence in my style has definitely taken a bit of a battering.’
