We Try To Persuade You That A Sequin Skirt Can Be Worn To Work

Because so-called partywear deserves to be worn during the day too, right? Photographs by Luke & Nik

OK, we know no one actually goes to party parties any more. And that ‘partywear’ really means turning up to someone’s flat in scuffed black ankle boots with a bottle of Blossom Hill under one arm and a grab bag of Walkers Caramelised Onion crisps in the other. (Sensations are definitely the most elevated crisp range.)

Which is why when you are invited to something rare where bubbles are flowing and the pearls are swinging (um), you need something appropriately party-like – but also something that you’ll actually be able to wear again IRL.

Here’s what we'd suggest. Bonus: you get to feel like a fairy princess on a mere Wednesday.

**1. Make your party dress one that’s strewed with gems...

...because while this & Other Stories dress will look great for weddings/Gatsby-strewn soirees, it’s cami style makes it super easy to ‘de-event’ with a distressed denim jacket and some really minimal flat slides.

The Frayed Denim Jacket, £235 MiH Jeans; Gem Print Dress, £39 & Other Stories; Hi Pool Slide Sandals, £22 Topshop; Cotton Twist Scarf, £15 American Apparel and Spike Hoops, £27 MFP – MariaFrancescaPepe at My Wardrobe

  1. Faceted Mid Size Hoop Earrings, £3.15 Forever 21; 2. Embellished A-Line Dress, £50 Topshop; 3. Duramo Slide Sandals, £18 Adidas at Fashion World; 4. Denim Jacket, £25 Monki

2. Dust off the glitzy mini and add a preppy button-down shirt

You’re hovering in front of the sequin skirt like it’s the last doughnut before Lent. Just do it! It’s not nearly as niche – or Barbie-tastic – as you think. Put it with some clashing leopard sandals and a preppy, resolutely clean-cut, button-down shirt and you’re well out of the dressing-like-a-dick woods.

3. Pair your gnarled old sweater with a shiny mermaid skirt

If we have one regret (OK,we do have more than one), it’s getting rid of our favourite Adidas jumper from when we were 10. Correction, it’s letting our mother get rid of our favourite manky old Adidas sweater. Because a sporty sweater with a dancy prancy skirt never gets old. Throw in some super kitsch shoes – Sophia Webster, always – and you’ve got a fun workwear mash-up, too. (Provided you don’t work in a bank – soz, but something coming up for you lot here v soon too, we promise.) Just swap for some Reebok Classics when you leave the office.
