Sartorially, mid-January comes close to being the dullest time of year. You're in a shopping limbo, stuck between picked over winter sales, and new-season stock dropping that can’t actually be worn for another four months because it’s only getting colder.
My advice is to use this time wisely by stocking up on timeless classics that can be worn now AND in spring. I went to Zara to try on six new season pieces that will keep your shopping hunger at bay, until the really superb stuff comes in.
The Fur Lined Parka
Okay, contrary to the above statement, I realise fur doesn’t exactly scream 'spring' but with the UK’s ever changing climate, anything goes over the next few months. Right now though, it feels like it’s only getting colder and as we descend even further into the dark depths of the dreaded January cold snap, a fur lined parka seems to be the only stylish solution. (Either that or just stay indoors and watch Making a Murderer).
The White Shirt
You’ve heard it all before; the ‘your wardrobe isn’t complete with the effortlessly chic white shirt’ jargon. But, let’s be honest, the standard white shirt can sometimes feel a bit humdrum (only a tiny bit, I still love it). So what can you do to mix it up? Try a shirt with an asymmetric hem. Pair this roomy alternative with cigarette pants and brogues for great work outfit that also accommodates for the post-Christmas bloat.
The Raw Edge Skinny Jean
Much to your parent’s dismay, the freshly cut raw hem is still in for another season. Not ready to butcher your favourite Levi’s with the kitchen scissors just yet? Try this budget friendly and subtly frayed pair of jeans instead.
The Biker Jacket
If January wages can’t quite cover that £1k Acne number you’ve had bookmarked for eternity then try this faux leather version. This classic cut biker style, void of any trendy bells and whistles, is an easy-to-wear versatile must have. Pair it with a chunky knit and blanket scarf now and your good to go.
The Masculine Coat
I’m a big fan of the ‘borrowed-from-the-boys’ look. Top off an asymmetric white shirt with a strong masculine jacket for a classic look with a contemporary twist. When temperatures finally start to rise, use this jacket to balance delicate frock or even chuck over a white tee and boyfriend jeans.
The Circle Clutch Clasp
There’s no denying the circle was everywhere last year, from the Celine-esque circle hair barrettes to the circle hoop earring revival you couldn’t budge for the rounded shape and it looks set to stick around. Give it a try in the form of this subtle and sophisticated clutch.
