Between the canapes and the champagne, weddings are pricey affairs. So, no judgement from us if you don’t want to mainline the credit card for every expense. And, with so many of our favourite high street stores now offering bridal options (looking at you Topshop, ASOS and Whistles) this seems like the logical corner to cut. But, the big question (other than the one you answer ‘I do’ to) does it look cheap? I mean, we had other questions too, like how does it fit? How does it photograph? Does it look like a standard high street dress? Step this way for all the answers…
We tried on the most popular gown from Whistles’ new bridal collection. It’s an off-the-shoulder ivory lace dress called the ‘Rose’, and it costs a whopping £599, which in perspective is still cheaper than the average wedding dress (in case you’re wondering that's £1,385!).
Tell Me About The Dress...
It’s a warm ivory tone, which is kinder on most complexions than stark white. And, it photographs as a creamy tone thanks to the slip underneath that gives the colour added depth. It has an A-Line cut, which means it flows from a nipped in waist. The front hem is raised ever so slightly, while the train pools on the floor, so if you pick this frock make sure you’ve thought about shoes as they will 100% be on show. The Bardot neckline is trimmed with a delicate scalloped lace.
Was The Devil In the Details?
This dress is lined, which means static isn’t an issue and that the lace doesn't feel too fragile. It also drapes delicately and fits like a dream. I tried on a size 8 and it didn’t need alterations. While you can’t see it, the back is tapered to ensure the neckline and sleeves stay in place and beneath its lacy shell, the body has a bonded bodice.
Does It Look Like A High Street Wedding Dress?
OK, I'm no expert having never been married or picked a wedding dress before, but this isn't your standard Whistles gown. The lace looks expensive (up close and far away). It's a very feminine design, one that would fit someone with more curves than I, but that didn't really matter because it has the wow effect whatever your figure.
