Never underestimate the versatility of a good bit of shirt. Be it a laid back plaid piece to slob out in, or a crisp white shirt for work, it’s worth having a few in your wardrobe to make picking what to wear extra easy. And hangovers less painful, too.

The other great thing about shirts is being able to pair them with pretty much anything, from a pair of super skinnies to an a-line mini, or layered over a jersey jumpsuit. What’s more, it’s crazy how easy it is to pick up an awesome shirt for next to nothing.

We recommend swinging by Forever 21 to scout out some of the best, most affordable styles, so we headed there first to try on the best shirts to save you a bit of time in the changing room.

The Workwear Shirt

A good ol’ pinstriped number will take you far. Smart enough to wear with some formal trousers and a chic trench for work, and yet cool enough to don with a pair of black jeans and heels for the evening, it’s the perfect office to bar item. Just make sure you whack on a new one for work the morning after the night before…

**The Classic Denim Shirt **

This frankly fantastic top gives the classic denim shirt a modern edge. With its tie at the waist and slightly longer length, it’s a great piece to throw over a jumpsuit on holiday or at a party. You could also pair it with a pair of skinnies and some heeled booties to rock the double denim look with total ease.

The Simples White Shirt

Time after time, when fashion heroes are asked what every 20-something woman should have in her wardrobe, the response nearly always includes a crisp white shirt. As cliché as it sounds, we’d have to agree. This cute sleeveless one will be perfect for your holidays or when it gets a wee bit warmer in rainy old England. In the meantime, tie it at the waist and throw a jacket over your shoulders to work white shirt chic.

Skirt, £12, jacket, £28, shirt, £14

The Girly One

Despite being pink, spotty and as cute as a button, this little number doesn’t have to look overly girly. Pair it with a longer denim midi like we have here for a more grown up look, and finish with a pair of show stopping stilettos to ensure you look sophisticated rather than sweet as sugar.

Shirt, £14, skirt, £19

The Plaid Shirt

A plaid shirt is like, one of the items my wardrobe is most populated with. And that’s because it’s so damn easy to throw on and look, well (if I do say so myself) super cool. This black and white one looks awesome with a pair of skintight black jeans and a leather look jacket, but would be equally as great with some casual bleached boyfriend jeans to kick back in at home. Take it with you right through to the summer months by tossing it over a white vest and some cut-off denim shorts.

Shirt, £18, jeans, £14, jacket, £26, bag, £17

The Grey Sporty Shirt

Whoever said a shirt couldn’t be sport-luxe obviously hadn’t seen this little number. Super versatile and very subtle, a grey piece such as this one is perfect paired with a leather look mini and sporty bomber jacket. This look is also a perfect opportunity to sport your Nikes outside of the gym. Sporty girls, this shirt’s got your back (literally).

Jacket, £28, skirt, £18
