The trainer trend, ah how you’ve saved our sore feet. Over the last couple of seasons, sporty footwear has made its way to the mainstream, with every cool girl going wearing her fave kicks with her caj weekend outfit.
I live in my New Balance 401s, wearing them most weekends and even managing to sneak them into work wear. But, when it comes to a night out, my getting-grubby old faithfuls just don’t cut it.
Whilst there are a few super cool girls that can make any old pair of adidas work with an LBD, Cara Delivinge and fellow supermodels, we’re looking at you. But if you’re not Cara and co, a new breed of fancy footwear has emerged.
Enter, the cocktail trainer! Think less sporty more style-y, glitter, embellishments, anything goes.
We decided to get our sparkle on and DIY a pair that would have use dancing ‘til dawn and make running for the last tube home a doddle
You’ll need
-
and Navy Glitter
-
All purpose strong glue (you can get this in the craft aisle of most large supermarkets for about £2.00 as well as online)
How to
Lay out a covering of newspapers for this DIY, trust us, or you’ll be seeing glitter for days.
Take your trainers (we used this £10 black pair from Primark, that had been bought with all the good intentions of being used for the gym, but never saw the light of day). Remove the laces from your trainers.
In a small bowl, mix your black and navy glitter, we used 3 parts black to 1 part navy, to give a nice coloured shimmer.
Spread the fabric glue onto the tongue of your trainers, and pinching the glitter between your fingers generously sprinkle and lightly pat down.
Continue until you have covered the entire tongue in glitter. Then, turn the trainer upside down and, as Taylor Swift would say, shake it off, sh-sh-shake it off (sorry).
Make a tiny pool of the all purpose glue on a scrap piece of paper (we can’t recommend Glu and Fix more, it’s amazing, the Ryan Gosling of glues, if you like). Take your navy gems, (this bit is a little fiddly) and lightly skim the edge of the pool of glue, so you get a tiny, tiny bit on your gem, and NO excess glue around, otherwise it will go clear and show on your trainers (nightmare) You could even use a toothpick or tweezers for extra precision. Don't attempt your eyebrows after.
We arranged our gems on the side panel of our trainers, (but you can do any pattern you like!) Gluing one at a time along the linings edge. We then worked in, making a line of gems diagonally across the centre, until the whole trainer was bedazzled. Repeat this on both sides of the trainer, and on the other shoe.
We got to this stage and realised more is more when it comes to sparkle, so we glued our navy glitter mix onto the back heel and top edge of our trainers.
For the pièce de résistance, we re-laced our trainers with these gorge silver laces.
Now these trainers are ready for a night on the tiles, it’d be rude not to take them for a spin. Just don’t let anyone step on my blue suede shoes new badass trainers.
